Hogarth: Industry and Idleness
Spring 2009 sees the Graves showcase a series of prints by
the masterful forefather of the political cartoon, William
Hogarth. A veritable 18th century comic strip, Industry and
Idleness tells the story of two apprentices, one who follows
the ‘good’ path in life, Francis Goodchild, and
one who strays from the road of the righteous, Tom Idle. These
prints, from Sheffield’s own collection, offer a rich
window on Georgian London and show perfectly Hogarth’s
eye for detail and caricature. |

Moore | Hepworth | Nicholson
A Nest of Gentle Artists in the 1930s
In the early 1930s a group of artists including Barbara Hepworth,
Henry Moore and Ben Nicholson took several creative holidays
at Happisburgh on the Norfolk coast.
During these influential summer breaks, the three found inspiration
in the surrounding coastline, its weathered stones and pebbles,
and the beauty of the natural forms they discovered around them.
This exhibition recalls those creative holidays – the
friendships formed, the work produced, and most importantly
their influence of the development of modern art in Britain.
As well as key works by Moore, Hepworth and Nicholson, the exhibition
will also include work by John Skeaping, Barbara Hepworth’s
husband at the time of the Happisburgh holidays. |

Out of the Ordinary: Spectacular Craft
Time-honoured techniques. Exquisite craft. Spectacular contemporary
art.
the extraordinary in the everyday. a new free exhibition
featuring meticulous workmanship and skill at the heart
of every work. Presented by the V&A and Crafts Council,
Out of the Ordinary: Spectacular Craft will bring together
the work of artists from the UK, America, Nigeria, China
and Japan. Taking inspiration from the familiar and the
forgotten, each of these artists has used traditional craft
techniques to produce stunning contemporary works. Employing
traditional skills, including embroidery, wood carving,
lace-making and marquetry, the artists play with extremes
of scale or re-work precious, ephemeral or everyday materials
to create new and striking effects. |

Timorous Beasties presents A Bird in the
Hand
Glasgow-based Timorous Beasties is one of the hottest design
studios currently working in the UK. A new exhibition by
the duo in the Millennium Gallery, based on inspiration
found in The John Ruskin collection of art and artefacts.
Timorous Beasties presents A Bird in the Hand will see the
designers embrace and subvert the traditional Victorian
aesthetics of the 19th century to surreal and provocative
effect. Illustrations and ornithological specimens from
the Ruskin collection will form the basis of a range of
new fabrics, in turn adorning everything from lamp shades
to furniture to create a veritable 21st century Victorian
parlour in the Millennium Gallery. |
