Recording Britain Now
Museums Sheffield is thrilled to host the second John Ruskin Prize for art in 2014 and to announce this year’s winner, Maggie Hargreaves.
Responding to the theme of Recording Britain Now, and inspired by the Recording Britain exhibition on tour from the V&A, this exhibition features the work of the Ruskin Prize winner Maggie Hargreaves and 22 runners-up. Over 70 years since the original Recording Britain project began the exhibition will present a fresh view of the UK’s urban or rural environments.
The John Ruskin Prize 2014 is part of the Campaign for Drawing and is a collaboration with the Guild of St George.
To Sun 2nd November 2014
  Recording Britain
In the winter of 1939 Sir Kenneth Clark initiated an extraordinary art project. Beneath the spectres of invasion and aerial bombing, the Scheme for Recording the Changing Face of Britain rapidly commissioned artists to paint ‘places and buildings of characteristic national interest’.
The resulting collection of over 1,500 paintings created a remarkable, yet highly selective, snapshot of a fast-changing country. Now held by the V&A, highlights from the Recording Britain collection will tour to Sheffield for the first time in 2014.
Recording Britain features paintings by prolific artists such as John Piper and Kenneth Rowntree, alongside work by contemporary artists including Richard Long, David Nash and Laura Oldfield Ford.
to Sun 12th April 2015
  Metalwork Collection Highlights
The home of Sheffield’s metalwork collection is being refurbished this winter thanks to the support of the DCMS Wolfson Fund and other generous funders. Over the next few months this display will showcase some of the highlights of this unique collection, from prehistoric cutlery to contemporary design. The refurbished gallery will open in spring 2015.
