To Tue 3rd May 2016
  Work in Focus: Godfrey Sykes
2016 marks 150 years since the death of Godfrey Sykes. Sykes studied at the Sheffield School of Art and became a highly respected artist and designer. This display showcases a selection of Sykes’ works from the city’s collection, including paintings, watercolours, designs and metalwork.

To Sat 25th June 2016
The Age of Abstraction: Women Artists
Abstraction was one of the most significant artistic developments of 20th century, with artists eschewing direct representation to create a new visual language that questioned the limits of art. It is believed that it was a female artist, Hilma Af Kilnt, who first pioneered abstraction; this display looks at the women who followed in her footsteps during the 1960s and 1970s.
To Sat 25th June 2016
Bridget Riley: Venice and Beyond Paintings 1967-1972
Bridget Riley is one of Britain’s most important and accomplished abstract painters, with a career spanning six decades. This new exhibition at the Graves Gallery will focus on a breakthrough moment in the development of the artist’s work: the introduction of colour. Following her first major abstract works in the early 1960s, Riley began to incorporate colour into her painting in 1967 by using a limited palette in works such as Rise 1 (1968), a highlight of Sheffield’s collection. The adoption of colour came to inform Riley’s developments throughout her ensuing career, adding a rich new dimension to her investigation of visual contrast and perception. The exhibition will chronicle this unique moment of change, showcasing a carefully selected group of paintings and studies from 1967–85, which situate Rise 1 within the context of works made during this period.

In the Making: Ruskin, Creativity and Craftsmanship
John Ruskin believed the act of making represents the perfect convergence of human spirit, skill and material. For Ruskin, creative effort shapes an artist or artisan just as indelibly as they in turn shape the stone they sculpt or the fabric they weave. This new exhibition curated by Museums Sheffield will explore Ruskin’s ideas on making through a broad range of historical and contemporary art and craft. In the Making brings together work by artists including Grayson Perry, Susan Collis, Edward Coley Burne-Jones and Ruskin himself.
Funded by the Guild of St. George, an organisation founded by Ruskin in 1871 with the broad aim of making the world a better place for humankind.

Traces of Empire: Decoration and Design in Roman Britain
In 43 AD, Britain was invaded and became a province of the Roman Empire. However trade, population movement and political alliances meant links had been forged before the invasion. This new display looks at the change in decoration and style during this period using significant archaeological finds from Museums Sheffield’s collections.
