![]() DEF LEPPARD Def Leppard Music Videos Def Leppard was formed in 1977 by Joe Elliott (Biography), Rick Savage, and Pete Willis in Sheffield. Def Leppard started out with rehersals in an old spoon factory off Bramall Lane. They were soon joined by Steve Clark and a bit later by Rick Allen. Phil Collen replaced Pete Willis in 1983. Viv Campbell joined the band after Steve Clark's death in 1991. Soon after their formation, the group became regular performers in the city's working men's clubs. They are one of the country's most popular groups in North America. The group have helped define the essence of modern rock 'n' roll. On June 6, 1993, almost 15 years after their first gig, they were the first-ever band to play the newly opened Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield: A triumphant return to their home town in front of a sell out crowd of 40,000. In October 1995, Sheffield paid tribute to their biggest export - plaques went up at the Crookes Working Man's Club and the Don Valley Stadium. The band gave the first exhibit to the National Centre For Popular Music and then went to tea with the Mayor. The day's finale was an acoustic gig at the 300-capacity Wapentake Pub where the band had played one of their very first shows back in 1978. Def Leppard's song "Photograph" has been voted as one of the top 20 songs of the past 25 years, as chosen by viewers of VH1. It came in at number 17. The single was a US chart number 1 in 1983 although it failed to make the UK top 40.
