FUND AGAINST RECESSION SET UP
A "Fighting Fund" has been set up
by Sheffield Council to help ease the burden of the recession. Council
chiefs have put £1.4M aside and will spend the money on responding
to any issues that crop up because of the economic downturn. If plans
to re-open two post offices in Sheffield get the go-ahead, the money
will come from this fund. Vacant shops in the new Retail Quarter could

RESIDENTS CLUB TOGETHER TO CHANGE STREET NAME
The road name has been a cause for concern
for many years but now fed up residents have banded together to change
the name of Butt Hole Role. It will now be known as Archers Way. The
residents of the Consiborough borough were fed up of tourists gathering
to have their picture taken by the road signs with some bearing their
buttocks. Some street signs had even been stolen. An internet petition
has been started to change the name back again. The road was originally
named after a communal water butt used centuries ago.
PEOPLE'S COURT - COMING SOON
Volunteers are preparing for a new role helping
to launch Sheffield's pioneering community justice panels. Members have
told how the initiatives will have a "fantastic effect" on
local matters. Offenders and victims of low-level crime can choose to
have cases dealt with via the panels as an alternative to the traditional
court process. If successful, the scheme will be rolled out throughout
the city. The Community Justice Panels will be launched shortly. Punishments
include meeting their victims, making restitution or restoring or replacing
damaged property. Sheffield Council are seeking moe volunteers to sit
on the Justice Panels, application forms are available from the Council
offices or by emailing CommunityJustice@sheffield.gov.uk.
HOME-TESTING HIV KITS
Sheffield has been picked to pilot a
new home-testing kit that aims to reduce the spread of HIV. Almost a
third of the people in Britain are affected by the virus which can lead
to AIDS and have not yet been diagnosed so are missing out on early
treatment options. The Goverment has picked Sheffield for a three-month
community pilot scheme. The kits will be available via community outreach
programmes and via various websites. The kits involve obtaining a swab
from inside the mouth and posting it off to the lab where the results
will be analysed and returned by either text or a phone call. The test
is completely confidential. If Sheffield is reflective of the natinal
trend, around 30% more people are living with the disease and are unaware
of it. If diagnosed early enough, people with the disease can lead normal
lives.
SCHOOLS TO GET TOP GRADUATES
Top young graduates from the country's best universities
are being drafted in as teachers to Sheffield's inner city schools in
order to boost standards. At least four city schools have expressed
an interest in siging up to the scheme which will run for at least 2
years. These include Firth Park, Chaucer, Hinde House and Parkwood High.
The scheme has increased the number of graduate places available. This
year, 850 graduates will be placed. The scheme has been on trial in
other areas of the coutnry and is now being rolled out nation-wide.
The graduates will go straight from univeristy into the classrooms.
The hope is that the scheme will inspire the pupils to go onto further
education and to increase staff skills. In South Yorkshire, training
will be delivered in partnership with a regional consortium made up
of both Sheffield universities, Hull University and Huddersfield University.

19/06/09 - The Sharks have renewed the contract of Player/Head Coach
Abita Lyons. He signs a new 2-year deal.
13/06/09 - The Tigers completed their Premier Trophy campaign with a
45-45 draw at Berwick on Saturday evening.
The Tigers went into the night knowing they couldn’t progress any further
in the competition, but with just pride to race for they still took
the meeting to a last heat decider and picked-up a well-deserved share
of the points.
Ricky Ashworth was in good form for Sheffield with 13 points and Richard
Hall (10+1), Paul Cooper (8+2) and Joel Parsons (7+1) all gave their
skipper good support.
In a keenly fought affair the Tigers took an early lead following a
5-1 in heat 2 from Parsons and Cooper, but Berwick fought back and by
the completion of six races had edged themselves into a 19-17 lead.
Sheffield quickly levelled things up with a 4-2 from Hall and Chris
Mills in heat 7 and then Hugh Skidmore and Parsons took full-advantage
of William Lawson’s misfortune in heat 8. Lawson had to go off a 15-metre
handicap after exceeding the two-minute allowance and the Tigers duo
responded by storming to a 5-1.
Back came the Bandits with a 4-2 in heat 10 and after a series of shared
races the home side eventually drew level and took the meeting to a
last heat decider with another four-pointer in heat 14.
But when it came to heat 15 the two teams couldn’t be split. Although
Michal Makovsky raced to a comfortable victory for Berwick ahead of
Hall and Ashworth, the Sheffield pair kept Josef Franc at the back and
the race and match ended all-square.
Ricky Ashworth 13, Richard Hall 10+1, Paul Cooper 8+2, Joel Parsons
7+1, Josh Auty 3+1, Hugh Skidmore 3, Chris Mills 1.
12/06/09 - Rotherham have signed midflieder Nicky Law from Shefield
United. He signs on a 2-year deal.
