The Sheffield Sharks basketball team was founded in 1991 beginning in the Second Division, gaining promotion the next year into the First Division and then becoming members of the Premier League in 1994. The team plays some games at the Ponds Forge Centre but mostly now at the Sheffield Arena. They are a successful team having had seasons where they have won all of the major championships at some time. Sponsors now are Westfield Health, a local medical insurance company and the club is actually termed "Westfield Sharks". Attendances for home games can vary up to about 5,000.
